  • L'Orangerie
    L'Orangerie

L'Orangerie holds the essence of Catherine's lifetime passion for travel, film, style, the visual Arts and above all, rummaging. Whether it is in an obscure market in Paris, a bazaar in Istanbul or a junk shop in the East End, the thrill of serendipity is always the same. "In many ways, it is an extension of my house - a visual autobiography."

L'Orangerie resists definition, the objects are eclectic and the only common factor is that they have all been hand-picked by the owner. "On principal everything here is surplus to requirement. Anything that is eccentric, evocative of mood or place, stylish, well designed or simply because I like it, belong here." L'Orangerie is not bound to the whims of the season - the visitor is as likely to find Panama hats and vintage style swimming caps in Winter as in Summer. This reflects the international clientele but more importantly the refusal to be dictated to by an increasingly dull retail world - where a sense of fun is all but gone.

"As a child, hardware shops and haberdashers fascinated me. With neither rhyme nor reason, everything suspended at different heights, the smells, the excitement of the unexpected, thrilled me. This is the sense of anticipation that I have tried to re-create here."

A desire for symmetery and practicality must be left outside the door with Francoise who firmly controls the crowd on Sundays. Similarly, male companions with their eye on the clock can enjoy the spectacle and a complimentary coffee. Although L'Orangerie only celebrated its first anniversary this year, it has already attracted the attention of the film industry and the jewellery is now to be seen on some of the most photographed women in the world. It has also put together a collection of resin jewellery for the label Toast.

From an old silk Kimono cascade thousands of splendidly coloured buttons from Paris and New York, a stuffed alligator climbs the wall - his gaping jaws revealing a row of fantastic glinting earrings.Moroccan mosaic tables, old rocking horses and perhaps the most fantastic selection of resin jewellery in London are all here. An old glass cabinet displays vintage Hermes, Breakfast at Tiffany hats and 1950s crocodile handbags. Nobody walks out of L'Orangerie without a beautifully wrapped package.

"The joy of buying on the continent for me was always the window displays and the anticipation of the wonderful wrapping and ribbons."

During the Summer, L'Orangerie held its first art exhibition in the basement gallery. Artists who would like to exhibit in this space are invited to apply.

Queenie and Ted (Linda Gray and Kally Laurence) customise carefully selected pre-loved clothing, above the "Keeping House" shop. The artist/makers source, design and sew quirky motifs depicting everything from ants to caravans onto garments to produce tactile, wearable art. Prices start at £75 for a unique jacket.

A bespoke service is also available and customers are encouraged to bring their own garments into the shop for a Queenie and Ted makeover. All the stock has a "green" pedigree and the stunning, ever changing accessories, including button necklaces and embroidered brooches, are all up-cycled in some way. Everything is designed and made in the UK by emerging makers. Our motto is to battle against the bland!

The Victorian shop interior is part art installation as Queenie and Ted adorn the space with their original artwork, hand -sewn signage and renovated chairs. Ryantown came about in the summer of 2008 when Rob received a call from a friend asking if he would like to take over the space on Columbia Road.

Rob’s inspiration is taken from artist inspired retail outlets as diverse as the Omega Workshops based in Fitzroy Square in London in 1913 to the Keith Haring Pop Shop in Lafayette Street NYC in the 1980’s.

The white walls of the shop create the air of a gallery space with a hand-painted tiled mural on one section, which has become much loved by all customers.

The shop is stocked with a selection of Rob’s intricate paper cuts, limited edition screen prints, and an ever changing range of handcrafted, small edition goods, all produced in Rob’s nearby studio.

Alongside these are examples of some of the many collaborative projects Rob has been involved in, including Clothkits and Earnest Sewn among others.

    EAT CAKE AND CARRY ON!

Treacle is an unashamed celebration of basic British baking. Greeted by the tempting array of fairy cakes, Victorian sponges and fruit scones, customers will instantly recognise the sights, smells and tastes of a bygone era. But this is no chintzy, rose tinted delusion of halcyon days- rather a realistic homage to the gritty times of the great British urban tea house (think Lyons)- right down to its drab décor, reminiscent of the typically British no-nonsense attitude with its accent on frugality and function – perfect for these hard times! Now comfortably settled into our larger shop, we also offer a selection of vintage kitchen furniture and accessories – just like your granny used to have - to help you recreate the good old days.
