Cement Encaustic hand made floor tiles.

For the past year, we have been developing a range of solid coloured cement encaustic tiles, with a workshop in Mexico. The hand made encaustic cement floor tiles are now available to buy. The encaustic tiles can be viewed at our website milagros.co.uk. We currently hold stock of ten colours but Milagros will add more colours and some patterns to this range during the year. We have sold unglazed terracotta, Saltillo, floor tiles for a number of years but this is our first venture into coloured, handmade, floor tiles to complement our range of wall tiles.

The cement encaustics tiles have a 5mm layer of coloured cement on a background of lightweight concrete, made using volcanic aggregate.

The subtle variations in the colour of each tile, makes the laid floor shimmer.

Milagros works directly with a few small workshops, in Mexico, and imports handmade Mexican wall tiles and floor tiles. The wall tiles are available in 30 different colours and 58 different decorative patterns. They range from tastefully subdued to intensely bright.

The making process and the nature of the materials used gives the tiles a distinct character. The encaustic floor tiles are not wholly flat or square. When installed the blend of slightly convex and slightly concave individual tiles creates a pillowed effect in the tiled expanse. The light reflects off the tiles at slightly different angles which combined with the variation in the glaze creates a surface with a broader range of tones than machine made tiles. The unglazed terracotta, Saltillo, floor tiles are similar in character to the wall tiles whilst the cement encaustics although very regular in shape and size, still have a distinctly handmade feel .

The tiles look good in both traditional and contemporary settings.

We have worked with a number of designers, architects on commissions such  Jamies Italian in Islington and Mosow,

Las Iguanas in Westfield Stratford,

Union Jacks in Covent Garden

Lupita East in Liverpool Street.

Milagros has a shop at 61 Columbia Road, London E2 in the same street as the famous flower market. Milagros is open on Sundays from 9am to 4pm, Saturday from 12pm to 5pm or by appointment. The tiles can also be purchased online at milagros.co.uk or by calling 0207 613 0876.
